Init Keyboard is an INIT file with two INIT resources, both designed to modify the keyboard configuration of your Mac. IT WORKS ONLY UNDER SYSTEM 4.1, AND MAY BE DANGEROUS IF RUN WITH EARLIER -- OR LATER -- SYSTEMS.
To run these INITs, simply drag Init Keyboard into your System folder and reboot. To disable them, either hold down the Shift key while booting (to disable them for the particular boot), or drag Init Keyboard out of your System folder. Each one will display a little icon while booting, to let you know they’re installed.
The Tilde INIT deals with the fact that, under System 4.1, the characters Õ and à are not ordinarily available -- as they were under previous Systems -- by pressing option-n followed by Shift-O, or option-n followed by Shift-A. It changes the keyboard configuration to make these two keys available as they were before.
The Toggle INIT sets up your Mac keyboard as an ordinary typewriter keyboard, so that Shift-period produces a period, instead of a < sign, and shift-comma produces a comma, instead of a > sign. The characters < and > are set to option-shift-period and option-shift- comma, respectively.
There is no (easy) way to undo the operation of Tilde INIT while running; you’ll have to reboot without it. You can modify the effect of the Period INIT by rebooting without it, or by running Toggle Key (version 1.4 or later), which is available in DL2 of MacUsers on CompuServe. At some point I may make both of these into a cdev, so they are available from the Control Panel, but don’t hold your breath.
If you want one of these INITs and not the other, you can use ResEdit to remove the unwanted one from the file.
